English numbers change units every 3 digits: thousand, million, billion, trillion. Cardinal (one, two) and ordinal (first, second) are distinguished, and years have special reading rules.
Group by 3 digits with units: 1,000 = one thousand, 1,000,000 = one million, 1,000,000,000 = one billion, 1,000,000,000,000 = one trillion.
For order, dates, and floors: 'the 3rd floor', 'March 1st', '21st century'.
It depends: 'zero' for the number itself, 'oh' in phone numbers, 'nil' or 'nothing' in sports scores.
Systematically understand English number reading rules.
Cardinal numbers indicate quantity (one, two, three) while ordinal numbers indicate order (first, second, third). Most ordinals add -th, but some are irregular: first, second, third. Dates use ordinals: March 31st = 'March thirty-first'.
Years are typically read in pairs: 1999 = 'nineteen ninety-nine'. The 2000s are exceptions: 'two thousand', 2001-2009 = 'two thousand (and) one'. From 2010, pairs resume: 'twenty ten', 'twenty twenty-six'.
