What is Saju (Four Pillars)?

Saju (四柱), meaning 'Four Pillars,' is a traditional East Asian method of analyzing personality and destiny based on birth time. The four pillars represent the Year, Month, Day, and Hour of birth. Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支), creating a total of 8 characters known as 'Palja' (八字, Eight Characters).

There are 10 Heavenly Stems (Gap, Eul, Byeong, Jeong, Mu, Gi, Gyeong, Sin, Im, Gye) and 12 Earthly Branches (Ja, Chuk, In, Myo, Jin, Sa, O, Mi, Sin, Yu, Sul, Hae). Their combination creates 60 possible Ganji (干支) pairs, forming the basis of the sexagenary cycle used throughout East Asian culture.

Saju analysis has a history spanning thousands of years and is not mere fortune-telling but a systematic analytical method based on the principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Even today, many people use it as a reference for self-understanding and career exploration.

What are the Five Elements?

The Five Elements (五行, Ohaeng) are a core concept in East Asian philosophy, representing the five fundamental forces: Wood (木), Fire (火), Earth (土), Metal (金), and Water (水). These five elements interact with each other in a continuous cycle.

Generating cycle: Wood feeds Fire - Fire creates Earth (ash) - Earth bears Metal - Metal collects Water - Water nourishes Wood. Overcoming cycle: Wood parts Earth - Earth absorbs Water - Water quenches Fire - Fire melts Metal - Metal chops Wood.

In Saju analysis, the balance of the Five Elements is crucial. When a specific element is excessively strong or weak, corresponding personality traits become prominent, and areas that need supplementation can be identified. The ideal state is a harmonious balance among all five elements.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an exact birth time really necessary for Saju analysis?

An exact birth time is needed to determine the Hour Pillar. With it, you get a complete Eight Characters (Palja) reading. Without it, a Six Characters analysis based on three pillars is still possible. Even without the birth time, basic tendencies and Five Elements analysis are available from the Year, Month, and Day pillars. For a more precise analysis, check your birth certificate or ask your parents. The core Day Master analysis is the same regardless of whether the Hour Pillar is available.

Should I use the solar or lunar calendar?

This analyzer uses the solar (Gregorian) calendar. If you know your birthday in the lunar calendar, please convert it to the solar date using a lunar-solar converter tool. In Korea, older generations often use lunar birthdays, so it's good to confirm the solar date with your parents. The difference between solar and lunar dates can be up to about one month, which can affect results.

Why is the Day Master (Day Stem) the most important in Saju analysis?

The Day Master represents 'yourself' in the Four Pillars chart. The Year Stem represents ancestors or social environment, the Month Stem represents parents or growth environment, and the Hour Stem represents children or later years. Only the Day Stem represents 'you' directly. Therefore, it is the starting point and core of Saju analysis, and your fundamental personality and temperament are determined by the Day Master's element. Professional practitioners always analyze the relationship between the Day Master and the other 7 characters.

How do the generating and overcoming cycles affect everyday life?

The generating and overcoming principles apply to daily life in various ways. For example, a person strong in Wood naturally excels in activities that express Fire energy (arts, expression), and balances well by cultivating Metal's discipline. In interior design, a person lacking Water might use blue tones or water-related items, while someone lacking Fire might use bright lighting or red accents. While not scientifically verified, it's an interesting way to apply the balance concept of Eastern philosophy to everyday life.

How reliable are these analysis results?

This tool is a simplified analyzer based on the basic principles of Saju studies. Professional consultations consider much more complex factors including the Ten Gods (Sipsin), Major Cycles (Daeun), Annual Cycles (Seun), and Divine Stars (Sinsal). This tool was created for educational and entertainment purposes to increase interest and understanding of Saju. It is not recommended as a basis for important life decisions. For deeper analysis, please consult a professional practitioner.

How is Saju different from Western astrology (zodiac horoscopes)?

Both Saju (Four Pillars) and Western astrology are based on the time of birth, but they are fundamentally different systems. Western astrology is based on the positions of the sun and planets at birth, classifying people into 12 zodiac signs. Saju is based on Yin-Yang, Five Elements, and the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, allowing for much finer classification with 60 Ganji combinations. Saju is a unique system developed over thousands of years in East Asian culture, characterized by its emphasis on the dynamic relationships of generating and overcoming cycles.
