Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between raw score and standard score?

A raw score is the direct count of correct answers. A standard score is derived from the raw score using the mean and standard deviation of all test-takers, normalizing for exam difficulty. Korean and Math grades are determined by standard scores. When an exam is harder, the standard score cut for Grade 1 tends to be higher.

Why is English graded on an absolute scale?

Since 2018, English has used absolute grading to reduce competition and excessive private tutoring. Grades are assigned based on score ranges: 90+ is Grade 1, 80–89 is Grade 2, regardless of how many students scored in each range. Korean History has also used absolute grading since 2017.

How are elective subject grade cuts applied?

Elective subjects are divided into Social Studies and Science tracks, with each specific subject having its own grade cut based on its test-taker pool. This calculator uses an average-based estimate. For precise grade confirmation, refer to official KICE data.

How accurate is self-scoring before official results?

Self-scoring on exam day can differ from official results by 1–3 points due to memory errors or calculation mistakes. If your estimated grade is near a boundary, plan with a one-grade margin in each direction.

What are the percentile ranges for each grade?

Grade 1: Top 4%, Grade 2: 4–11%, Grade 3: 11–23%, Grade 4: 23–40%, Grade 5: 40–60%, Grade 6: 60–77%, Grade 7: 77–89%, Grade 8: 89–96%, Grade 9: Bottom 4%. Absolute-graded subjects (English, Korean History) do not follow these percentile bands.

Do grade cuts change every year?

Yes, grade cuts change annually based on exam difficulty, number of test-takers, and scoring trends. For example, the Korean Grade 1 cut was 134 in 2024 but dropped to 131 in 2025 due to a harder exam. Always select the correct year for accurate results.

Is this calculator based on official data?

This calculator is based on officially published grade cut data from KICE (Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation). For elective subjects, an average value is used. For important decisions such as university applications, always verify with official KICE data (suneung.re.kr) or consult a professional.
