A watermark is a technique that inserts text or a logo semi-transparently onto an image to indicate the ownership or source of that image. It is mainly used by photographers, designers, and content creators to prevent their work from being used without permission. Images with watermarks allow the source to be easily identified unless the watermark is deleted or cropped out.
Text watermarks insert characters such as names, website addresses, or copyright notices onto the image — quick and easy to apply. Image watermarks insert logos or signature images for a more professional branding effect. This tool supports text watermarks and allows you to freely adjust font size, color, opacity, and position.
Generally, the bottom right or bottom left corner is most commonly used. This position can make the watermark visible without covering the main subject of the image. However, depending on the composition and content of the image, the center or another position may be more suitable — check through the preview.
A watermark is an effective means of deterring unauthorized use, but it is not complete protection. Image editing software can be used to remove watermarks, but this legally constitutes copyright infringement. Combining watermarks with copyright registration and metadata embedding enables stronger copyright protection.
Because digital images are so easy to copy and distribute, protecting creators’ copyrights is more important than ever. A watermark is the most basic and effective way to clearly mark the source of an image by imprinting the creator’s name or brand on it, thereby deterring unauthorized use. Applying a watermark is especially essential when sharing images on social media or online platforms.
A watermark should be noticeable enough without interfering with the content of the image. Setting the opacity to around 30–60% allows the watermark to be recognized without detracting from the viewing experience. White or black, which contrasts with the image background, is commonly used for color, and a font size of about 5–10% of the image width is appropriate. Using concise and clear text is beneficial for readability.
Photographers insert watermarks on works published in portfolios and online galleries to mark their copyright. Designers use watermarks when sharing drafts with clients to prevent unauthorized use before final delivery. Online store operators insert logos or site names on product images to increase brand awareness and prevent image theft. Bloggers and influencers also add their account names as watermarks on their content images to clearly indicate the source.
